Heat vegetable oil in a large stockpot or dutch oven over medium heat.

Bring mixture to a boil and simmer covered over moderate heat 1 1 2 hours. Add ham and sausage. Working in batches add sausage and cook stirring frequently until sausage is lightly browned about 3 4 minutes.
